The Three Things Every Business Needs to Be Sustainable

The conversation of sustainable business growth usually focuses on revenue, consistent clients, and scaling. But true sustainability is about much more than making more money. It's about building a business with the capacity, energy, and systems to support both your growth and your life. When I work with my clients, we aren’t just looking at the numbers. We look deeper, more holistically, so that you can build a business that supports your life.

Let’s dive into these three aspects of business. Pay attention to your body as you read them. Which one(s) are you responding to?

Capacity: Build a Business That Fits Your Life

When I talk about capacity I mean the amount of clients you have time and energy to serve in a day, week, or month. As you build your business, you might say yes to everyone and pack your calendar full, not giving thought to how much you can handle.

In order to undo some of the overwhelm you are experiencing, it’s time to get really honest about how many people you can serve at a time. You have a monetary goal, of course, so you may be thinking, “But I have to serve this many people in order to make the money I need to make.” Yes, I hear you. That is why the next part of this is to look at your pricing.

You have this beautiful opportunity to price your offer suite so it allows your business to support your life. Start by deciding how much money you want to make monthly. Then, decide how many clients you can support each week. Finally, do the math. How do you need to price your offers to have a business that supports you properly?

If the numbers you’re getting in this exercise feel scary, that is ok! I love helping my clients make sure the numbers make sense. I would encourage you to take a look at your relationship with money and what you believe you are worth. Because it doesn’t matter what the numbers are, there will be people who will pay it.

Energy: Energy Gain vs Energy Drain

I invite you to pay attention to what gives you energy and steals it. The goal here is to build a business that doesn’t constantly drain you. That doesn’t mean that every day will be inspiring or effortless. But you get to build a business that feels good.

Take an audit of your business, your offers, your tasks, and your systems. Go through each and pay attention to what gives you energy and what consistently takes it away.

From there, you get to look and see what could shift. Can you delegate? Can you batch work? Can you adjust your offers to feel more aligned? Can you do the tasks that drain you first thing, so the rest of the day or week can feel more exciting?

Protecting your energy isn’t selfish. This is an incredibly important audit of yourself and your business. When you have a better understanding of your energy in your business, you can make decisions that allow you to thrive.

As a Strategic Business Partner, I’m able to take many tasks off of my clients plate so they feel energized, fulfilled, and excited about business again.

Systems: Organization to Reduce Mental Load

Depending on where you are in your business ownership journey, it may be time to reassess your systems. Systems create consistency, allowing your business to be run more smoothly, reduce decision fatigue, and free up mental space.

Systems don’t have to be complicated or costly. Sometimes they’re as simple as documenting client onboarding process, creating reusable templates, or organizing your projects in one place.

Real sustainability means your business can continue to grow because it is supported by the right foundation. Systems create that foundation for you.
